woodScreen is a prototype of embedded sensors and lighting in plywood. This is part of a series of experiments in reactive lighting and organic user interfaces. In each instance the input and output devices remain hidden below the surface and recede into the background when not in use.
woodScreen is made with plywood, an engineered lumber, and is therefore relatively consistent in dimension, while maintaining an organic finish. The plys allow for embedded systems to be inserted into multiple layers creating an interface which serves as an input and output device. Most importantly, the interaction with an organic material such as wood may soften the rigidity and precision of computational interfaces.
The LED array consists of 20 ThingM BlinkM modules covered by a Nintendo DS touch screen.
