Human Hive

Collaborators: Michael Weller, Cheng Xu

HiveBot encourages participants to join a “swarm” to construct hive-like structures from bloxes, or life-size cardboard building blocks, using pre-defined rulesets. During a building session, participants take on the role of insects; each is given a card from a ruleset that indicates where they may place blocks. Every time a block is added, the local structure changes and triggers new structural rules. Participants see how a swarm of wasps, or modular robots, can construct a complex structure even though each individual operates with only a simple rule.
